Basic Roulette Rules

when playing online roulette the game consists of  a wheel with numbered black and red colored pockets is spun counter-clockwise, at the same time as a ball is sett spinning clockwise along the roulette wheels inclined edge. The gambler bets money on the roulette table, wagering on in which pocket or group of pockets the ball will end up when the wheel stops spinning. If you have guessed right, and the ball ends up in the pocked/pockets group you bet on, you win.

The Roulette wheel

The Roulette wheel was originally a mechanical wheel of some intricacy, with 37 or 38 differently colored and numbered black and red pockets. Nowadays in online casinos, the wheel is digital, but the basic premise is still the same: You have a chance of 1 in 37 (or 38), that any specific number will turn up when you spin the wheel and the ball.

Table Layout

The table is placed to the right or left of the roulette wheel, and this is where you place your bets. In the middle of the table you find the differently colored numbers in red and black, corresponding to the numbered pockets on the wheel. This is where you make so-called Inside bets, on specific number or groups of numbers. On the outside of the table you find the most common group bets, such as betting on odd or even numbers, or on black or white numbers. These are the so-called Outside bets, as the are placed along the edges of the betting table.

Types of Bets

As we touched upon earlier, there are two types of bets in Roulette, Outside bets and Inside bets. Let´s have a look at the most common ones.

Outside Bets

Outside Bets get their name from the fact that they are placed outside the middle number betting area on the table, in fields specifically marked for these bets. Chances of winning are high, but the payouts are modest, between even money and double the money.

  • High / Low bet. This means betting on the high series of numbers. Wagering Low means betting on the ball stopping on 1-18 and High means betting on the numbers 19-36. A win pays even money.
  • Even or odd numbers. Pays even money.
  • Black or red numbers. Pays even money.
  • Dozens. Bet on the numbers 1-12, 13-22 or 23-36. A win pays 2-1.
  • Columns. Bet on a column of 12 numbers. Pays 2-1.

Inside bets

Inside bets are placed in the numbered part of the table, by placing markers on the numbered boxes on the table, or on the lines between them. Odds of winning are lower on Inside bets, but payouts are higher, between 5 and 35 times your wagered money.

  • Specific number bet. Pays 35-1.
  • Two number bet. Pays 17-1.
  • Corner bet. Bet on 4 numbers simultaneously. Pays 8-1.
  • Line bet. Bet on a line with 3 numbers. Pays 11-1.
  • Double line bet. Bet on 2 parallel lines Pays 5-1.

How to Play Online Roulette

Bets are placed on the table in online roulette just as it is in the land casino version. You choose how much you want to bet on the spin by clicking the different domination chips in the window, and then clicking on the bet you wish do make. Usually you can bet anywhere between a dollar and hundreds of dollars.
Once you have placed your bet you press the spin button. The roulette wheel will start to spin and after a few seconds the virtual ball will fall onto the wheel and when it stops you will either have won or lost.

Roulette Variations

There are a lot of different online Roulette variations. Some of them have a progressive jackpot that you win by making a side bet, and you win the jackpot by hitting an unusual series of point. Others, like Microgaming’s Multi Wheel Roulette allow you to play many wheels at the same time. In the final analysis, however, the rule differences are small.
Below we present the three most common varieties.

European Roulette

European Roulette is the most common version when playing online, and the one we have already described above. The wheel has 37 pockets, as has the table. This is the easiest Roulette game to get a grasp on, and the one we would suggest for beginners.

American Roulette

American Roulette, strange as it may seem, was the first sort of Roulette that was played in Europe. For different reasons however, it was the variety that gained popularity in the USA. The big difference compared to European Roulette is that both wheel and table has an extra number, a double zero. All this extra pocket represents is an extra chance to loose, and American Roulette hence has a much larger house advantage. In short, we advise against playing American Roulette.

French Roulette

French Roulette is the same as European Roulette, with the difference that it offers a host of combinations for Inside bets, with French names. If you want to have a look at these bets, click either “advanced player” or “Neighbor bets”/”Announce bets”, depending on the software provider.

Strategies and Tactics for Betting

There are many different strategies on how to win big at online roulette, like the Martingale system. Many people swear that these betting strategies will tip the houses edge to the players favor. Mathematically, this is impossibility, but if you want to try them out, we list the most common bellow.

Martingale System

This strategy is, as all other Roulette strategies, only applicable for even money bets, and the idea is that you double your bet after every loss, so that the next win will always recover all previous looses. When you win on the other hand, you immediately go back to the original betting sum.

Labouchère System

According to the Labouchère system you should decide from the outset, before playing, how much you are aiming to win. Then you write down a series of positive number that add up to the amount that you have decided to win. Then, with each wager, you wage an amount equal to the sum of the first and last numbers you wrote down. If the bet succeeds, those two numbers are removed from your list. if you lose however, the amount of money lost is added to the end of the list. Then you continue doing this until you have either won the predetermined sum of money, or until the money set aside at the outset is lost.

D’Alembert System

D’Alembert is basically a more cautious version of the Martingale system. Before you begin, you decide on a “base wager”, let´s say 1 dollar. Every time you loose, you add another base wager, and every time you win you go back to betting your base wager.

Good luck!!!
