France v Argentina

France v Argentina

30 June 2018 – Kazan Arena – Kazan – Russia

The paths these two powerhouse soccer nations have taken to get to the Round of 16 could not be more different.

France topped Group C with an impressive seven points from a possible nine and Didier Deschamps’ side haven’t yet to get out of first gear in doing so.

On the other hand, Argentina were 3 minutes from crashing out in the group stage before a late winner against Nigeria found them a place in the last 16.

Who are favourites to win?  France – Everything points to a French victory, but soccer is a strange game sometimes and surprises can occur.

Uruguay v Portugal

Uruguay v Portugal

30 June 2018 – Fisht Stadium – Sochi – Russia

This Round of 16 clash almost didn’t eventuate due to some crazy Group B action in the dying minutes at the group stage.

An injury-time VAR penalty awarded to Iran and successfully converted in the 93rd minute meant that Portugal, (who were seconds away from playing hosts Russia at this stage), now have the must tougher task of travelling to Sochi to play Uruguay.

Both sides ooze quality, however, Uruguay’s younger legs may tip the scales in their favour and away from the tired and somewhat ageing Portuguese, who appear overly dependent on Cristiano Ronaldo to score their goals.

Who are favourites to win?  Uruguay

Match Odds

 Uruguay 7/4 7/4 17/10
 Draw (After 90 minutes) 19/10 19/10 19/10

Spain v Russia

Spain v Russia

01 July 2018 – Luzhniki Stadium – Moscow – Russia

Spain dug in deep to equalise with Morocco in the last few minutes of Group Play to secure top spot in Group B and earn themselves this clash with host nation, Russia.

Whilst the Russians will be buoyed by a fanatic home crowd in Moscow, expect the Spanish to have too much class and big game experience in tournament play to be denied here.

Spain could, and should win easily.

Croatia v Denmark

Croatia v Denmark

01 July 2018 – Nizhny Novgorod Stadium – Nizhny Novgorod – Russia

Croatia’s ageing squad has been in sublime touch in Russia 2018 and everything seems to be going well. Usually arguing between themselves at major tournaments, the Croats appear to have their act together here in Russia.

Modric and Rakitic have been in compelling form and could steer Croatia to victory over a tough but ultimately under-classed Danish outfit.

However, Eriksen is due for a big game for the Danes.

Who are favourites to win?  Croatia

Match Odds

Team  Betway  William Hill   888 Casino
 Croatia 10/11` 17/20 13/15
 Draw (After 90 minutes) 11/5 23/10 9/4
 Denmark 15/4 15/4 15/4

Brazil v Mexico

Brazil v Mexico

02 July 2018 – Samara Arena – Samara – Russia

Man-for-man, the Brazilians simply ooze talent compared to the hard-working and hard-running Mexicans.

Whilst the Mexicans must be congratulated for their exciting style of fast and counter attacking play and thereby opening up the tournament with their defeat of Germany, the Brazilians should be too strong in this encounter.

However, don’t expect the Mexicans to be over-awed. They have a LOT of travelling fans in Russia.

Who are favourites to win?  Brazil

Match Odds

Team  Betway  William Hill   888 Casino
 Brazil 8/15 1/2 1/2
 Draw (After 90 minutes) 3-1 16/5 57/17
 Mexico 6-1 6-1 23/4

Sweden v Switzerland

Sweden v Switzerland

03 July 2018 – St Petersburg Stadium – St Petersburg – Russia

This clash is perhaps the closest matched of all the Round of 16 matches.

Both Sweden and Switzerland are tough and battle-hardened sides. We expect favouritism for this clash to swing backwards to-and-fro between now and kick-off time.

We think the Swedes may just have enough fuel in the tank to take this match (given their slightly easier passage through group play), but it could go either way.

Who are favourites to win?  Switzerland

Belgium v Japan

Belgium v Japan

02 July 2018 – Rostov Arena – Rostov-on-Don – Russia

Belgium have been in sublime form in this tournament, playing with Brazilian-like flair and they have quality personnel in order to play that way.

Hazard, Lukaku, Mertens, de Bruyne, Carrasco and Fellani form a top-class unit of attack-minded players.

Japan, on the other hand, snuck through on the dodgy FIFA Fair play rule after playing their worst game of the tournament against Colombia when everything was to play for.

Who are favourites to win?  Belgium and deservedly so.

Match Odds

Team  Betway  William Hill   888 Casino
 Belgium 9/20 2/5 2/5
 Draw (After 90 minutes) 7/2 15/4 7/2
 Japan 15/2 13/2 7-1

Colombia v England

Colombia v England

03 July 2018 – Spartak Stadium – Russia

England gambled everything on resting star players (including captain and top goal scorer Harry Kane) for the final group match with Belgium. They lost and now face a stern task matching up against a powerful and in-form Colombian unit.

One cannot help thinking the move may backfire.

For England’s sake, I hope I’m wrong, but the whiff of a Colombian upset is in the air.

Who are favourites to win?  The bookies are staying with England.
